FAQ's
Q : Why do I never get any results?
A : If you don't get any results, it means you're being too specific. Remember, the larger the location, the more specific you can be.
Q : Why can't I vote on anything?
A : You must have an account, and be signed in to it in order to be able to vote.
Q : I can’t find a specific nightclub that I know exists?
A : We tried our best to get as many nightclubs as possible onto the database, but we have probably missed a few. If you know a club exists and we haven’t got it, please let us know by using the ‘list a nightclub’ page. All you need is a name and location at minimum, but obviously the more information the better. Please also let us know if we list a club which is now closed.
Q : I don't understand how to use the search?!
A : Here is a detailed overview of each search criteria:
- Location - Select the city or town you want to look in.
- Sub Location - Currently only London has a sub location. This is so that you can search for clubs in certain areas of a large city. It is not essential to select a sub location, but if you wanted to go out in central London, avoiding the suburbs, select 'Central (All)'. If you want to go out in a suburb, such as South West London, select 'South-West' and it will find all the clubs around the South West suburbs, such as Kingston, Wimbledon, Putney, Epsom, Clapham.
- Day - Select the day of the week you intend to go clubbing. The results are night specific due to many clubs having specific nights on each day of the week, and a lot may only be open a few nights. If you don't select this, you can be much more picky in the rest of the search. Fridays and Saturdays will also bring up more results than if you select weekdays.
- Music Choices - Basically, the more options you check, the more results will come up (except if you don't check any, in which case, it will ignore the music). The search engine will bring up a clubnight if any of that night's 6 possible music selections, matches any of your selections. So if you select house and soul, any clubnight with either house or soul will appear.
- Age Range - Generally, clubs tend to appeal to 3 age groups. 1: The younger 18-24 year old crowd, which can tend to have a studenty atmosphere. 2: The young adult, generally aged between 21-30, and with some clubs/nights explicitly forbidding under 21s, especially in London, and on the weekends. 3: The adult population, which we state as 30+, but these clubs can also have younger people, and may sometimes be around 25+, but be aware that this is the least common age range among clubs, and will bring up the least results.
- % Guys/Girls - This is the number of guys there are in proportion to girls on a clubnight. At the moment, 'equal' will bring up results ranging from 60/40 - 40/60, i.e a 10% variation. This may change in the future after we get more votes, but it will be displayed here if it does. It is also very important to remember that in reality, more guys go clubbing than girls, so it is actually VERY rare to get a result for 'more girls'. This criteria is really here to help you avoid sausage fests, so if a club filled with guys bothers you, simply select 'equal'. Although of course if that's what you're looking for, then 'more guys' is the option to choose!
- Dominant Crowd - As another way to help get a feel for what the club is like, you can also search by the sort of people who go there. Generally, most clubs are pretty mainstream, and this will bring up by far the most results. This search will also depend heavily on how people decide to vote, as it is based a fair bit on personal opinion.
- Student Rating - This is really for everyone, not just students. If you are looking for a young crowd, with a really student atmosphere, i.e fancy dress, cheap drinks, pretty lively, then select 'good'. If you'd like a student atmosphere but not massively fussed, then select 'average-good'. If you're not massively keen on a student atmosphere, but not too bothered, select 'average-bad', and if you really hate the student crowd and you feel they're just noisy, annoying and immature, select 'bad'! 'Average' is if you're looking for a generally mixed crowd.
- Night Rating - This is again based quite a lot on personal opinion, as you may well really enjoy a night with a low rating. But if you're looking for a night in which the mainstream view is quite positive, select a higher rating, as this is a general overview of how good the night is, and the higher it is, the more likely it is to be good. Obviously the higher the rating you choose, the less results you will get.
- Average Drinks Price - Depending on how much you are willing to spend on a drink, make your selection, but the cheaper you select, the less results you will get.
- Student Nights Only - This will be a new option, designed to let you find the official student nights in a town. Whilst the age range and student rating should help you find the good student nights, this is here to guarantee that you find the student nights, irrelevant of what people vote!
- Exclude Gay Nights - This is here so that you are able to avoid the gay/gay friendly nights in a city, if that's not your sort of thing.
- Gay Nights Only - If you select this, every result that appears will be a gay/lesbian/bi night, or at least a gay friendly night. Each night displays exactly what it is in the additional info.
- Reset - If you have selected a number of options, this will refresh the search on the page you are on, so that you can start over and select new options, instead of having to go back and uncheck boxes etc...
- Do It! - This is essentially the 'Go' button, and will carry out the search...For those who didn't get it!
- Search for a Club - This is an entirely separate search in order to let you bring up a club you know to view information about it or vote etc. You can type in any letters from the club or the location it is in (although please note that London is never mentioned, it will instead be under 'Mayfair' or 'Soho' etc), and it will match it with the club page. At the moment it brings up the clubs 'Saturday' page, as this is when the majority of clubs are open, but please note that the very tiny number of clubs closed on a saturday will not come up in the search...A small flaw we are unable fix right now!
- A General Rule! - The larger the city, the more picky you can be. So if you're looking in London, you can go wild with the search, whereas somewhere like Yeovil is going to be a little more restricted! Also remember that the more criteria you select, fewer results will come up. And finally, most of the search criteria is based on user votes, and peoples experiences. The search is really a guide to help point you in the right direction, and find clubs and clubnights which suite your individual needs, as there are so many clubs out there, and its very difficult to know where and when to go! It's always advised to also check their website (we try our best to provide links from the club pages) for special events and further details to provide further accuracy if you do think about going somewhere new!
Q : I don't understand the club page?!
A :
Here is a detailed overview of the club page:
- Name - Fairly obvious, although we put the location of the club after the name, to help identify chains.
- Top Star Rating - This is automated, which averages all the night ratings to give an overall rating for the club. No one can ever vote on this.
- Address and Map - If you hover over the address, a map is displayed over the picture, and when the mouse is clicked while hovering, the map will stay, until you click the address again. While the map is held there you can zoom in and out and move around etc to help locate the club.
- Website - We have an external link on almost every club page. This is to help you get more information about the club. We aim to link the most helpful and informative page. If the club has a website we will almost always link it, unless it is no longer used, or there is little information, or just doesn't exist, in which case we may link another social site such as their Myspace, Bebo or Facebook page. If you're interested in the club, and especially if you intend to visit it, we definitely advise to use the link to find out more information as many clubs host special events, and can vary their week as they choose.
- Social Site - This is a link, usually to a facebook page/group for that particular club. This can sometimes be more up-to-date than the clubs actual website, and it gives you a feel for the crowd etc so it's definitely good to have a look at this if you plan on going.
- Summary - Every club should have a brief review about it. This is to give you a general idea about what the club is like, which nights are special, how many rooms etc... If there isn't a lot to say, we're sorry for babbling! If you feel it is incorrect, or you would like to write a summary as you know the club well, please let us know, we would be more than happy to change it, if appropriate of course!
- Night Tabs - Each night has its own page, click the one you want to see. If it is a lighter blue and 'unclickable', it almost always means it is closed. If it is open, but closes early, or something, we will say that in the summary. If we get its opening days wrong, please let us know!
- Night Rating - This should be a general overview of how the night was, and how good a time you had.
- Opening Hours - While we try and get the physical opening hours, remember that some clubs don't let you in after a certain time which may well be a few hours before it closes. Also remember that it may be open longer if the night is busy and still full at closing time, or if there is a special event.
- Legal Age - Should really say Minimum Age, something we unfortunately cannot change at the moment. If we know it, we put it, and if you are below this age, you are unlikely to get in, especially if you are a guy! If it is 21+, like many places can be in London and on the weekends, they can be relatively strict, again more so on guys.
- Required ID - Almost every club nowadays will ask for a driving license or passport if you look under 21. Many will ask whatever age you are, so it's always advised to carry one of these 2 forms of ID whenever you go clubbing. It can vary though, and we try and display whatever the club requires on that night, as some require student id as well, and some may accept other cards etc...
- Main Room Music - This is the music the main room in the club plays, and should be voted on accordingly. You can vote up to 3 times as different genres are usually played in one room. The main room should be classed as the biggest and most popular. If you hover over the name 'Main Room', an image may appear showing what this room looks like.
- Other Room Music - This will only appear if the club has more than 1 club room. Most clubs only have 1 room with a dancefloor and therefore this will rarely show.
- Age Range - This should show the age of the crowd. Generally, clubs tend to appeal to 3 age groups. 1: The younger 18-24 year old crowd, which can tend to have a studenty atmosphere. 2: The young adult, generally aged between 21-30, and with some clubs/nights explicitly forbidding under 21s, especially in London, and on the weekends. 3: The adult population, which we state as 30+, but these clubs can also have younger people, and may sometimes be around 25+, Please vote accordingly to the age range you feel the club accommodates most.
- Does this Night Love Students? - If you feel the night is extremely student friendly, i.e. pro fancy dress, cheap drinks, young crowd, then vote by clicking the very top of the glass. If you feel it is quite studenty, with a student crowd, but maybe not the cheapest drinks or very into fancy dress etc, then vote a little below the 'Hell Yeah' mark, but still very high so you can see all the orange in the shot glass, as it is still a student night. If you feel the crowd is a little more mixed with some students, but maybe also older students, and some young adults, then it should be voted around average, maybe a little above. When you start getting an even older crowd, averaging the mid-20's and above, the glass should be filled below the 'Alright' mark, with it being the lowest when students are essentially either banned or simply non existent in the club.
- Capacity - While we struggled to find the capacity of most of the clubs, this is where it would be displayed! Please let us know, if you are aware of it and we haven't listed it.
- Percentage Guys/Girls - This is the ratio of guys to girls in the club. Remember the left value is guys, and the right is girls. So if you vote towards the bottom of the dropdown menu, you are voting for more guys, while the top of the dropdown menu is more girls. Be realistic, and try and avoid the extremes unless it is genuinely accurate.
- Dominant Crowd - One of the more experimental options, vote on what sort of people you feel the club was filled with on that night. While mainstream is the common and more obvious option on most nights, and usually accurate, if you feel the crowd is a little different, try some of the other options. For example, if a club has a strict door policy based on membership or looks, it is 'exclusive', or if the people there are all city workers, 'professional', or if it's a hardcore drum & bass night, then probably 'Raver', etc...
- Dress Code - Usually smart casual, many clubs attempt at an 'anti-chav' policy of banning hoodies, tracksuits, trainers etc. Most clubs/bouncers do tend to enforce the dress code very strictly on the weekends, and it is strongly advised not to wear trainers, and to put on a shirt on Friday and Saturday as this can ruin a lot of peoples night out. We try our best to state what the club expects on each night, but if we don't know, we don't put anything, and you should go on the above rules.
- Entry Price - Most clubs tend to charge you a fee on entry, usually getting more expensive later on, so on the whole, the earlier you go, the cheaper it is. Students and members also tend to get discounts now and again, usually on weekdays. Weekends and London also tend to have higher entry fees. If we know the entry prices, we will display them, but if nothing is there, don't assume it's free, go on the above rules.
- Drinks Prices - We have divided the drinks prices into 3, Vodka Mixer, Alcopop, and Beer, as these are the most common drinks clubs serve. If you remember what you paid, please let us know by voting. An average is taken of these 3 drinks to give you a general value of how much the club charges for a drink. While there may be drinks deals, such as 2 for 1, or all inclusive (pay entry and get drinks free), this is an estimate, so just estimate how much you think you paid for the drink and it will all even out!
- Bounce-o-meter - This is how good the bouncers were towards you. If the bouncers were rude, aggressive, arrogant or on a power trip, feel free to fill the thermometer to the very top. If they didn’t really say much, just quietly asked for ID or just stood there, vote around the ‘Expected’ mark. If they were friendly, helpful and up for some banter, fill the thermometer very low to show that they were ‘Chilled and Controlled’. Just remember, if the thermometer is empty, they are good bouncers, if it is full, they are bad!
- Queue Time and Length - This should give people a general idea of what time the queue is busy, and how long you had to wait. Again, this is just an estimate to give people an idea.
- Amount of time to get a drink - This is the amount of time you had to wait around and queue for, until you received your drink.
- Additional Info - This is where we will write any information specific to the night, such as whether it is a student night, or a gay night, or if it is important to check the website as the night can vary etc. It's always a good idea to check the additional info as this can contain some very relevant information about the night.
- User Comments - If you want to leave a comment, simply sign in and click 'add a comment', fill out your comment, and click 'submit'. It will submit automatically, and will also display your nickname, what star rating you gave that night, and also the date you made it. Please be aware that at the moment you cannot delete your comment after you submit it, so please check what you say before you submit it. If it is essential your comment it deleted, please contact us and we will get it removed (We aim to have a system to allow you to delete your own comments in future). People can also rate your comment with a thumbs up or down, and you can order the comments to see the best and/or worst at the top! Remember, no spam please, your account will be removed if you do so! You can report a comment if you feel it is inappropriate, simply click the button and fill out the details.
- Message Box - The box you can type stuff into, sends information to our email, and we can see which page it was sent from, so if something is incorrect, or has changed, please just type it in and click send! Please do NOT write your comments in this box, as it just gets sent to us, and we have to submit it under the name 'NCF'! A design error on our part, but the add a comment button is located in the user comments box. Also, remember we cannot reply to these messages unless you leave contact details.
- Bookmark - If you would like to link this page on a social networking site, you just click the link and follow the instructions. This way other people can see the page you like!
Q : I want to hire out a club for a special event, how do I find out which venues are available to hire?
A : Almost all venues allow you to hire out a room, or even the whole club on the nights they are closed. The best thing to do is to search for clubs in your location, and then give some a call, we provide phone numbers for the vast majority of clubs, and most of them like people hiring it out, so will be very welcoming.
Q : Do you know how to play the Yeehaa/Hula Hula drinking game?!
A : We sure do! Visit www.yeehaagame.com for details
